The Social Media Funnel defines the distance between you(r organization) and your online groups. A distinction is made in 7 groups.

The seven categories in the Social Media Funnel are:
- Public (total audience)
- Friend / fan / follower
- Subscriber (eg newsletter subscribers / RSS)
- Prospect
- Customer / member
- Loyalist (loyal to the brand / organization)
- Advocate (Ambassador)
